TextileLab

TextileLab
In May 2021, the Textile Center opened the first TextileLab in Iceland. Equipment includes a laser cutter, felt loom, vinyl printer, digital embroidery machine, 3-D printer, wool carding machine, digital knitting machine (Kniterate) and two Tc2 digital looms. The lab is located in walking distance (2 mins.) from the Textile Center and open for anyone interested in working with textiles: makers, students, artists, craftsmen, etc. Please note that the lab facilities are NOT included in the residency fee and access to individual machines needs to be booked separately!  You can email the team (see link below) or do this on site.

We have two TC2 digital looms located in our TextileLab:

  • Sample Loom: 30-inch weaving width, equipped with 6 modules and 1,320 warp threads (18/cm or 45 epi)

  • Larger Loom: 43-inch weaving width, also with 6 modules and 1,320 warp threads (12/cm or 30 epi)

Artists in residence may apply for a TC2 residency, which grants exclusive access to the larger loom only for a period of 2 or 4 weeks (maximum duration: one month). You can apply for a TC2 residency using the application form [https://www.textilmidstod.is/en/textile-residency/how-to-apply/application-artist-in-residence].

The TC2 enables artists to produce designs typically requiring a Jacquard loom. Please note that we do not offer training, classes, or technical assistance at this time. Therefore, only experienced digital loom weavers should apply. Users must be able to roll on the warp beam, thread the heddles and reed, and operate the TC2 software independently. Important: Materials and warp for the larger loom are not provided.
