Textile Center

The Icelandic Textile Center (ITC) is a private-non profit makerspace and creative hub in the rural region of northwest Iceland. Located in a historic building, the Textile Center engages in research projects and long-term collaborations with international partners, fostering education and innovation in textiles. These efforts are supported through initiatives such as workshops in our TextileLab and a textile residency program. The Center is one of seven "Knowledge Centers" (Þekkingarsetur) in Iceland, collaborating with Ministry of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education.

Our aim is to build a bridge between traditional handcrafts and digital technology and offer expertise and spaces for makers, artists, scholars to:

  • explore traditional handcrafts
  • experiment, research and innovate
  • skill-share and learn new skills (e-textiles, biotextiles, digital textiles)
  • develop products in line with the principles of a circular economy
  • find and experiment with solutions to textile waste

The Center is overseen by a governing board composed of representatives from universities, regional municipalities, associations, and businesses—including the Association of Municipalities in Northwest Iceland, the Reykjavík School of Visual Art, and the Iceland University of the Arts.
